Because of his passion for preserving the cultural heritage of Bali, Indonesia and SE Asia, hotel owner and designer Aohar Setjadibrata has assembled remarkable examples of Bali's rich history. Ancient teak carvings are everywhere. Original Le Mayeur paintings hang in the grand lobby. Guests sleep on antique beds owned by Indonesia royalty surrounded by authentic antique decor. One of the dining rooms is a 300 year old Kang Xi temple brought piece by piece from East Java. The showpiece of the hotel is a small stone bowl called a Cupu Manik - a 16th Century vessel from which a priest would sprinkle holy and healing waters over sick villagers. This was one of the very first significant pieces collected by Mr. Setjadibrata when he begin his collection twenty five years ago. The Tugu Bali Hotel is situated by a sacred beach near the peaceful ancient fishing village of Canggu. Twenty five thatched luxury suite and pavilions, constructed in traditional Balinese style, are built beside or over wild lotus ponds. Many of the bathrooms in the Dedari Suites (ground floor) are outside and are kept romantically private using thatch, water and beautifully carved screens. Plunge pools and personal massage beds are also standard. In the Rejang Suites, huge screened verandas hold the large bathrooms with a sunken silvered bath and private massage bed. The rooms have all the amenities expected of a first class hotel including miniature clay jugs of homemade lemon shampoo and soaps. The hotels deluxe suites, the Walter Spies and Le Mayeur Pavilions, are works of art and are the ultimate in Balinese luxury. The hotel spa offers treatments using traditional Balinese methods and all natural ingredients such as carrot, cucumber, yogurt and Indonesian Jamu elixers. Balinese entertainment comes naturally here-often by members of the staff who are trained in the art of Balinese dance and music delight in sharing their culture and talent with guests.
