Area Attractions
Guspini was inhabited by man since the oldest times. Here you can find many interesting archaelogical sites, as nuraghi, (a special type of defensive structure dated back 2000 B.C.), menhir representing Divinity, and more traces of the pre-nuraghic period left by domus de janas (= fairy houses) and 'tombe dei giganti' used as interment places. In the middle of the village, near the Zeppara hill, you can admire a natural monument: basalt pillars called Canne dOrgano (= organ pipes), which is a rock formation raised by a volcanic eruption three million years ago, whose faces are 4 to 20 metres high. Montevecchio 7 km far from here, with its ancient mines which enrich the landscape with both artificial and natural touches which recall in the visitor a surreal timeless image of unused plants deepened in an uncontaminated nature. On Sardinian southwestern coasts near Arbus, there are two marvellous corners where an intact, desert-like nature reigns: the dunes of Piscinas, heart of the Costa Verde and the dunes of Pistis-Torre dei Corsari (just 20 mins drive). In fact, the strength of the mistral wind has powerfully pushed towards the hinterland the sand accumulated by the sea onto the coast, thus forming hills, up to thirty metres high and over. The very fine, yellow sand, the waves shaped by the wind and few, twisted, drought-dried trees testifies to the regions unusual climate, almost comparable to that of a little Sahara. At Piscinas-Ingurtosu, a walk among the dunes - preferably at dawn or sunset, so as to avoid the great heat of summer months, or out of season - allows fully enjoying a marvellous panorama. 'Monte Arcuentu' which is recognised in Italy and in Europe as one of the seven Sites of European interest separates the mining district from the sea. It is an impressive extinct Vulcan, which has inspired thousands of legends: on its top you can admire the ruins of a castle dating back to the 'giudicale' age. Here you can enjoy trekking admiring the wild and at the same time welcoming nature and its not difficult to watch the Sardinian deer in its wild state, that is in the area with 10% of its world population Sanluri (15 mins drive)where you can visit the Castle of Eleonora D'Arborea (also known as 'Castello Giudicale')particularly interesting because it is one of the best-preserved Medieval fortresses in Sardinia. Barumini (40 mins drive) where you can visit 'Su Nuraxi' a complex developed during the 2nd millennium B.C., in the Bronze age, for which no parallel exists anywhere else in the world.
