Nordhausen is located south of the Harz region. The river Zorge flows through the city. The original site of the town, today the Old Town, lies on a south-western sloping bank. From 1937 to 1945 the Nazi armament centre and Dora-Mittelbau concentration camp were located in Nordhausen, which can today be visited. Since its inauguration in 1917, Nordhausen has been home to a theatre which has made important cultural contributions to North Thuringia. The 1922 union with Loh-Orchestra Sondershausen, well known throughout Germany, led to the creation of a three-tiered theatre musical theatre, performance and ballet. The city is at the southern end of the Harz Light Railway HSB. The district of Nordhausen stretches from the Windleite/Hainleite in the south to the Harz Mountains in the north, from the headwaters of the Helme and the Bleicheraeder Mountains in the west to the nature reserve of Old Stolberg and the Golden Flood Plain in the east.
