The ancient city of York is about an hour away, and you'll need a day to explore. Walk around the preserved city walls, visit the impressive Minster, and amble around the labyrinth of narrow streets known as The Shambles for interesting souvenirs and curios. The lovely 'floral town' of Harrogate is within reach too, or take a journey back in time at the award winning Eden Camp, a unique museum recreating scenes from wartime Britain. A visit to Sewerby Hall and Gardens is well recommended too, as is a gentle tour through the rolling Yorkshire Wolds, and the more dramatic scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors and Captain Cook Country.
