The city has a deep sense of the past that you can feel as you walk through the streets of its historic district, yet is still a modern city with a thriving business and entertainment sector. Richmond is an ideal location for almost any kind of trip; it is a great destination in and of itself with a tremendous history as well as a contemporary business district. Richmond is also a short drive from southern coastal beaches, mountainous hiking trails and everything that Washington DC has to offer. Richmond was once known as the capital of the South, and one visit here will tell you why. The Valentine Museum provides a great view into Richmonds history, as does the amazing Agecroft Hall that was moved to Virginia brick by brick from England. If history is your passion, youll have to visit the Richmond National Battlefield and the Richmond Civil War Visitor Center, which was established in 1936 and protects 763 acres of historical land. This beautiful area of town is the perfect spot to take a stroll or ride down the canal; you can even take a canal boat tour. The Virginia State Capitol, the Executive Mansion, and St. Johns Church are also historic sites that you wont want to miss. If youre looking for more culture, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is an excellent place to view more than 6,000 years worth of fine art collections including Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Impressionism, Faberge and more.
Some of Virginias most gorgeous parkland is also found in Richmond. You can visit Belle Isle state park or the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden for a picturesque landscape that offers spectacular photo opportunities, or get into the wild at the James River Park.
