tropical rain forest pristine white sand beaches wildlife refuge with 750 acres of primary and secondary forest. Functions as a center for research on mammals and birds. There are 330 migratory and resident bird species including the brilliant Scarlet Macaw, Marbled wood-quail, three wattled bellbird, toucans, trogons, manakins, flycatchers and hummingbirds. The reserve is also home to white faced monkeys, spider monkeys sloths, white nosed coati mundi, raccoons, iguanas and a large number of butterflies. Well marked trails facilitate bird watching. Leon Marino Restaurant located next to the pool has international and Costa Rican style lunch buffet daily open from 12 am to 5 pm. The Grill located in the center of the resort has savory traditional Costa Rican and international cuisine dinner by menu with seafood and grill specialties. Carabelas Restaurant, a brand new restaurant is located in the Selvamar area and serves traditional and Costa Rican style buffet breakfast daily from 7am to 1030 am. Also servces buffet style dinner Wednesday to Friday 6pm to 10 pm. Palenque Carara located nextto Playa Blanca prepares Costa Rican fare, hamburgers and sandwiches. Lunch is only servced 10 am to 430 pm. Snack Mantas, in the center of the resort offers an assortment of fast food such as pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs. Is open 10 am to 10 pm. Al Garete Bar is open daily from 10 am to 12 pm and serves a variety of refreshing cocktails and beers.

How to get:
The trip takes between 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on traffic. When leaving San Jose take the main highway which is Carretera Interamericana, going North towards Puntarenas. The highway will pass the Juan Santa Maria airport. Stay on the Interamericana for about 10-15 minutes more, until you see an exit for a town called Atenas. Take this exit and you will see a sign for Hotel Punta Leona. Continue to follow the signs for Hotel Punta Leona, Jaco and Quepos, as you go through the towns of Atenas, San Mateo, Orotina, and Tarcoles. The hotel is located on the right hand side of the road, about 15 minutes after you pass over the Tarcoles River. You will see a big sign and entrance gate on your right hand side; don't worry you won't miss it.
