The Royal Castle of Saint-Saturnin is part of one of The Most Beautiful Villages of France, within the Parc des Volcans. It is facing one of the five major roman churches of Auvergne and has great views on this medieval village and the surrounding hills. It was the residence of the Count of Auvergne who had its own regional court. As such, it belonged to the Queen Catherine of Medicis and then to Marguerite of Valois ?the famous Queen Margot- who gave it later to the King Louis XIIIth. This well restored and impressive medieval fortress is a perfect example of the Middle Age military architecture: triple walls, ramparts, towers with crenels and machicolations. It was built during the XIIIth century, then enlarged and embellished during the next two centuries, under the influence of the Renaissance, with large windows and French gardens in the park. It has been classified as a Historical monument and can be visited: a way to get inside and to discover its genuine oak made XVth century framework, its large furnished historical rooms or the Queen Catherine?s vaulted bedroom.
