THE MESON DEL ALFEREZ occupies one fourth of the original house where the Alferez Real, a sort of royal lieutenant, representative of the Spanish Viceroy, lived at the beginning of the XIX century. The Mexican writer Don Francisco G. De Cossio, in his book Brief Historical review of Xalapa, makes reference to an 1809 text, which narrates the celebration that took place in this house to honor the ascent of Ferdinand VII to the Spanish throne. The Alferez, Don Jose Antonio de la Pena, swore loyalty to the king bearing the Royal Banner, while two mayors took hold of the lateral tassels. Nevertheless, the Alferez would later be a pacific precursor of the independence from Spain, together with Don Diego Leсo, another influential supporter of the liberation cause. Because of that the Alferez lost his post, but he did live here until his death. The house has remained practically intact for the last 200 years, as a fortunate exception in the almost demolished ancient colonial street. During a slow process of restoration, which lasted seven years, the house was renewed using traditional materials, such as earthenware tiles, lime and rustic wood. From one of its corners we rescued the Royal Banner relief and reproduced it on other walls, following the same architectural logic. Wherever possible, the Meson del Alfarez has left the original ceilings and floors, as well as doors and windows. These included needle hinges, floated glasses and slot windows. In some interior lintels and doorjambs the Meson del Alfarez has rests of the original paint. The Meson del Alfarez is painted using the old mixture of sea salt, quicklime, alum and cooking oil as lubricant, and the colors are also the ones used at that time. Because of our pursuit of upholding the basic general layout of the house, the Meson del Alfarez has unique designs for each room, although it also mean a big challenge for the accomplishment of the project and decoration, as a result, all the rooms are different; so much so that their personality called for a name. Therefore the Meson del Alfarez has named each one, after local legends ancient streets or interesting people of Xalapa. All these details might go unnoticed by guests, but not the atmosphere they create, the feeling of living at the time when the house was at its prime. Additional information: Children 8 and under stay free in the room with parents and in existing bedding. Children age 9 to 11 receive a 20pct reduction. Breakfast is not included for children.
