The 1913 hotel welcomes guests to Four Diamond luxury amid the peaceful beauty of Iowa's rich countryside. The hotel is located just 25 minutes northwest of Des Moines, Iowa's capital city. The celebration begins when you step through the doors into the warmth and glow of the English Arts and Crafts lobby with its great stone fireplace, brown leather furniture, Persian carpets atop terra cotta tile floors, and replicas of the hotel's original chandeliers. Upstairs, there are 40 rooms, each with its own theme, six of them two-room suites, four with wood-burning fireplaces. Baths are as sizeable as rooms and designed in the European tradition. Many have large walk-in showers, double sinks, and spa tubs. Room themes are spelled out in meticulous detail and range from a suite in French Quarter decor that honors the hotel's most famous guest, Louis Armstrong, to the Quilt Room that celebrates one of the region's time-honored crafts. Several rooms, including the Swedish, Mexican, and Chinese, honor immigrant groups who settled in Iowa. Though steeped in history, the Hotel Pattee offers guests the latest in technology, including a business center, high speed Internet access, and three telephones in every room. The hotel's staff turns out the finest Midwestern cuisine in its restaurant and lounge. David's Milwaukee Diner, the hotel's restaurant, was the focus of a recent "Best of Historic Eateries" on the Food Network channel. One of the innovative luxuries offered in the 1913 Hotel Pattee was a two-lane bowling alley in the basement. State-of-the-art lanes were returned to service in the 1997 renovation and remain one of the hotel's most popular attractions. The hotel's lower level is also home to a fully equipped exercise room, a storage room for bicycles (yes, visitors bring their bikes to ride Iowa's vast network of trails), massage rooms, and a spa with whirlpool, sauna, and steam room.
