The Pitti Palace al Ponte Vecchio has been built inside the Rossis Medieval Tower. The original building was constructed in 1250 and it was partially destroyed in 1944 during World War II along with other buildings on both sides of the Ponte Vecchio. Fortunately/ the Ponte Vecchio/ 7 metres away from our location/ was spared from the bombings. The original stones of the facade/ have been used to restore the Tower after the end of World War II/ and they are visible today on the side of Borgo San Jacopo. Inside a major restoration took place in order to create the hotels rooms and services while preserving the ancient structure of the building. The Buche Pontaie/ holes that in the 13th century were created to support the scaffolds used during the tower sconstruction/ have been preserved during the restoration and used to let daylight inside the building. If you are staying in one of the rooms with those Buche Pontaie you will enjoy a unique view over the city and its monuments.The facade that overlooks Via Guicciardini has been modified during the centuries and today does not look like a tower. Although the original height of the building was not modified/ large windows and balconies are now characterizing the look of the facade. It is easy to guess that in the past the building must have been one of the better observation points in town. Today/ you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city from the Panoramic Terracelocated on the 6th floor. The hotel also houses another treasure/ at floor -2/ we find a stone plinth of the counterforce of the Ponte Vecchio (Roman Wall) on which the powerful Cerchi family erected a tower that some existing documents give to 1210. Then the tower belonged to other major Florentine families/ including the Nerli/ the Canigiani but is moreknown as the Torre dei Rossi.
