Santiago de Compostela city and its Cathedral Santiago de Compostela is mainly a monumental town, with one of the most splendid and harmonic architectural ensembles in the world. Considered to be one of the three spiritual capitals of Christendom together with Rome and Jerusalem, from the Middle Ages it became the goal of religious pilgrimages, a phenomenon that would give birth to the pilgrims' Road to Santiago, the real spine of the art and the thought. Due to its unparalleled cultural and architectural heritage, the city of Santiago de Compostela was declared Historical-Artistic Ensemble and National Monument in 1940. It was declared World Heritage of Mankind by the UNESCO in 1984, and owns numerous prizes and honours that recognize its work in the field of conservation and valuing of its rich patrimony: European Prize and Flag and Medal of the Parliamentary Assembly (Council of Europe), Premio Firenze (Commune di Firenze), Premio Real Fundacion de Toledo, Premio Gubbio, Premio Europa Nostra, Europe Prize of Urbanism (European Commission), Premio Manuel de la Dehesa, European City of Culture of the year 2000 and Premio Nazionale Torre Guinigi (Italy). Besides, the pilgrims' Road to Santiago was declared First European Cultural Itinerary by the Council of Europe, and Cultural Heritage of Mankind by the UNESCO. The Cathedral of Santiago, centred on holy relics, is an heterogeneous building of different historical styles and artistic tendencies that have been successively superimposed. The Romanesque Cathedral, the most ancient part, was erected (1075-1211) on the site of the first churches that were built in the place where the Apostle's ashes appeared, the last of which was destroyed by Almanzor in the summer of 997. The building has a traditional Latin-cross ground plan with three naves. At the west door we can see the climax of universal Romanesque sculpture: Master Mateo's Porch of Glory, completed in 1188, in only 20 years. Its structure consists of three arches and more than 200 stone figures, with the central arch divided by a mullion that includes an image of the Apostle James at the top. According to a centuries-old tradition, those visiting the Cathedral place their hands on this column, which has gradually worn away the stone and left deep marks. At the back, facing towards the altar, there is an image of Master Mateo in a kneeling position, known popularly as the Santo dos Croques (Saint of the Bumps), due to the tradition of hitting one's head against the image in order to receive some of his wisdom. However, the best known picture is the west Facade, named the Obradoiro and it is the climax of Galicia's baroque style. The stairway was built between 1594 and 1600 for permanently solving all the problems caused by the difference in ground level and going up to the elegant balcony overlooking the Obradoiro square. This fair area belongs to the Fundacion Semana Verde de Galicia, that together with Asociacion Ferial Semana Verde de Galicia, manages the area at its activities. The Asociacion has been more than 25 years working in the development and organization of fairs, where important business are carried out and new markets are opended. The natural area surrounding it, of about 350 Ha, is of extreme beauty. It is embraced by the river Deza and has oak trees and stones of granite. The Carboeiro Monastery is also placed in this natural area
