Basque Countrys Urdabai Reserve- a landscape characterized by lush green and narrow valleys merging into estuaries- Arteaga Castle rises dramatically- with its neo-gothic tower made of limestone stone and marble from Ereno. The original tower dates back to the 13th century- however the current structure was built in 1856 when Napoleon III and his wife Eugenia de Montijo restored the tower because their son was proclaimed an honorary citizen of Biscay. In 2000- Garbine Azkuenaga acquired the castle- with its unique combination of history and natural surroundings- and spent three years transforming it into a stunning hotel- masterfully combining period features with modern elements. Spend the days exploring the surrounding reserve- taking in the sheer cliffs- coastal landscapes- rivers- marshes and meadows. In the evening- savour a superb meal at the castles restaurant or enjoy a wine tasting in the well-stocked cellar.

How to get:
From BIO-Bilbao Airport Exit the airport taking the N-633 road for 1.9km - take the exit towards Bilbao Santander and San Sebastian. Follow the directions towards Donostia San Sebastian along the N-637 about 14Km later you will be able to join the A-8 motorway. Follow the motorway towards Donostia San Sebastian about 3Km later- take the turn off for Amorebieta Gernika. Leave the motorway and join the BI-635 to Gernika without going through the centre of Amorebieta. Once you arrive at the outskirts of Gernika- take the bypass towards Lekeitio BI-2238. At the end of the bypass you will find a roundabout- Take the first exit towards Lekeitio. Gauteguiz de Arteaga is located approximately 5km away- after Kortezubi. The BI-2238 goes through Gauteguiz de Arteaga. There is a chemist to the right of the road. About 100mtr after the chemist- you will find a fuchsia-coloured sign indicating the correct left turn into Gaztelubide Street- take this turning. Keep driving and you will soon see Arteaga Castle on the right.
