A 17th century retreat with spectacular interiors in the centre of Ampudia, Casa del Abad stands in the medieval village s main square and has an abundance of period features, a beautifully rustic spa, an award-winning restaurant and pretty gardens with a pool and a tennis court.
This is a delightful place with plenty of quiet corners in the garden for relaxing. The rooms are simple yet enchanting with adobe walls treated to a series of red, yellow, blue and terracotta washes. Paintings, patterned rugs and an interesting range of artefacts from bowls and vases to bottles and dolls adorn the rooms.
Wander around the town with its two-story houses supported by wood pillars creating porticoes. Visit the San Miguel Collegiate Church, a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. The 15th century castle is also well worth a visit. Return for dinner in the restaurant, which used to be the wine cellar and still has ancient wine presses and low wooden beams.
