SOKOLSKI MONASTERY An interesting landmark in the area surrounding Gabrovo is Sokolski monastery -The Assumption a remarkable monument of the Revival architecture. You can reach it by bus or car /it is 12 kilometers south-east of Gabrovo/ or along the hiking route from Etura along the purpose-marked paths for about an hour and a half /4 kilometers/. The monastery was founded in 1833. During the following years it extended its activities. In that way the ecclesiastical center turned into an educational one and during the Russian-Turkish war into a military hospital. The school has sheltered Vasil Levski, Neofit Bozveli /he was a teacher here/, revolutionists of Captain Dyado Nikola. Of great interest in the monastery is its museum exposition, the ancient icons, made by Zachary Zograf and the stone fountain with the falcons work of master Usta Kolyo Ficheto...............20 км ETURA Etura is the only open-air ethnographic museum in Bulgaria. It is located in the quarter of the same name in the town of Gabrovo on the north flanks of the Stara Planina Mountains. The complex is built through the restoration of existing ancient objects, re-creating of buildings on the models from the past and introduction of original outfits. The craftsmen display live in their tiny shops traditional cooking, along with manufacturing of ceramic articles and products from the traditional Bulgarian artistic crafts - cutlery, braiding. The originality and the distinctive artistry of the people of Gabrovo are shown in an amusing and intriguing way. The original architecture and folklore, and national costumes of Gabrovo region are preserved very well. There are also many old-time fountains, ancient house-museums, and taverns......................18 км DRYANOVO MONASTERY Dryanovo monastery is located about 4 kilometers to the south-west of Dryanovo. Round it the Dryanovo River meanders picturesquely. The natural landmark Bacho Kiro cave is nearby. The monastery was established in the beginning of the 12th century in Tsarkovishte countryside. In its present-day localation the monastery has existed since 1845. It consists of two churches the smaller one, St. Archangel Michael, dates from the same year. The other one, The Assu Holy Virgin, was built years later. Vasil Levski and father Matei Preobrajenski stayed at the monastery. The history of Dryanovo monastery is connected with the Bulgarian Liberty struggle of the Ottoman yoke. It was that during the April uprising the band of the priest Hariton waged a nine day battle against the much morenumerous Ottoman army. A very interesting landmark is the monument-ossuary which rises in the back yard of the monastery. It was built in 1895 in memory of the perished insurgent..................................15 км SHIPKA MONASTERY The Shipka Monastery is located 12 km from Kazanlak, close to Shipka village, which is situated at the foot of Stara Planina Mountain. It was built in memory of the Russian soldiers and the Bulgarian militia who died in the Russian-Turkish Liberty war. The structural design is made by a Russian architect and shows the characteristics of the Russians cathedrals in the seventeenth century. The monument has picturesque decorations, multicolored, with arches, friezes, and golden domes, which capture the sight of tourists from all around. Most impressive is the belfry which has seventeen bells. There is a big vault made of three arches which form the main entrance of the monument. The inner side of the monument is also very interesting. There is a big wooden iconostasis covered with gold, icons, donated by a Russian monastery, marble plates carved with the names of the dead soldiers, and in the crypt there are several sarcophagi containing the remains of the Russian soldiers.......................30 км TRYAVNA Ever since the antiquity Tryavna is a cradle of many crafts. The town is located in the northern folds of Stara Planina Mountain. It is the Bulgarian traditions and folklore through which you will feel the grandeur of Bulgaria. The craftsmen of this region are genius architects, inspired creators, iconographers, and woodcarvers. The construction, woodcarving, tailoring, furrier, and blacksmith trade have been crafts not only for the bare living, but real masterpieces of the art at that time. The ancient Revival houses, craftsman shops, the smell of the centuries-old woods turn Tryavna into an attractive art, craft, and cultural center. An interesting landmark of the town is the Museum of Tryavna Iconography School, which preserves over 160 icons, which are real examples of the wisdom, charm, and strength of the Bulgarian revival spirit.................................30 km VELIKO TARNOVO Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in 1187-1393. Today the town is one of the richest historical, architectural and cultural landmarks. Open for visits are the historical hill Tsarevets, unique with its evening show *Sound and Light*, the old town, and the street of the crafts, called the Samovodska Market with numerous little shops in which craftsmen are working even to this day. Here are located the Sarafkin*s House - one of the many beautiful Renaissance houses, the House with the monkey, the monument Valchova Zvera, Stambolov*s Inn and many churches. This is the town where the self-taught master Kolyo Ficheto worked and left many architectural landmarks. A magnificent view towards the old town opens out from the Asenevtsi monument, which is situated in a picturesque peninsula of the Yantra river..........................40 км ARBANASSI VILLAGE The village of Arbanassi is one of the most picturesque places in Bulgaria and is a real paradise for tourists. It is situated 4 kilometers from Veliko Tarnovo and panoramic views towards the hills of Tsarevets and Trapezitsa open out from it. The houses here impress with their incredible charm, specific atmosphere, and unique architecture from the 16-17th centuries, with huge stone walls, high fences and pretty yards. Its history is very rich. In 1921 with the Tsars decree, Arbanassi was announced as a resort and since the year of 2000 as an architectural reserve with national significance. The first evidence shows that Arbanassi has existed as a settlement since the 14th century. It is presumed that the village was established by Bulgarian boyars, who came here together with their peasants, from the western districts after the conquest of Arbanashka land by Ivan Asen II. During the Turkish occupation its dwellers had taken advantage of certain tax concessions which helped the flourishing of the crafts and trade, as well as the great development of the village during the Revival period. At the end of the 18th century Arbanassi was plundered and burnt many times. Its population diminished vastly. After 1810 a new location of Bulgarians began.
