The George Hotel Town Centre

The George Hotel is believed to be the oldest existing building in Reading, dating back to at least as far as 1423. It was one of the major coaching inns between London and the West Country in the 18th century, and it still retains many of its wonderful original Coaching Inn features, including Tudor Archways and a very attractive Cobbled stone courtyard. The main entrance from King Street still contains some of the original timbers, and 18th and 19th century facades overlook the courtyard. Standing in front of the Dickensian lamp-lit entrance, you can easily imagine horse-drawn carriages arriving outside with weary passengers alighting to a warm welcome, a hearty meal and a much needed rest from their long journey..
