In 1790 the first water-powered machines were built to spin cotton. The first water-powered industrial factory Slater Mill was built on the banks of the Blackstone River. The Blackstone river runs 46 miles from headwaters near Worcester MA to Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island.
The Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor is comprised of 250000 acres between Worcester MA and Providence RI.
