Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge is located in the heart of the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary and is a truly unique architectural concept consisting of 96 distinctively luxurious oval-shaped rooms- overlooking a waterhole which attracts a large array of wildlife- especially elephants. In the evenings the animals gather at the waterhole - a spectacular site to behold- to drink at the watering hole.
The restaurant - which serves international and local cuisine - and terraced bar command spectacular views of the waterhole and surrounding grasslands. Elephant- buffalo and a variety of plains game can be seen throughout much of the year. The area is illuminated by floodlights to facilitate game viewing at night- and there is an underground tunnel and chamber allowing guests to closely and safely view wildlife at ground level.
The Sanctuary offers many diverse opportunities for guests to experience the unique flora- fauna and culture of this fascinating ecosystem. Night game drives provide guests with an opportunity of seeing animals not usually encountered on a daytime game drive.
Take a nature walk with qualified guides; enjoy a bush dinner or breakfast- champagne sundowner at Kudu Point or visit local communities and experience their culture. 1- Tsavo National Park
Take to the wild by exploring the Tsavo. Tsavo National Park is very popular as is indicated by the high number of tourists. Some of the attractive scenic features include-
Large herds of elephants and other wildlife.
It is easily accessible by road- air light aircraft and railway. The Park is a catchments for coast resorts visitors.
Popular legend of Tsavo The Man-eaters of Tsavo.
Yatta plateau - It is about 290Km long and is one of the worlds longest lava flows.
Lugards Falls on the Galana river - This is not a true falls but a series of rapids. Visitors an walk down to the river to view the rapids.
Mudanda rock - This is a long rock outcrop that is about 1.6Km long. There is a dam at the base. Animals can be seen drinking. Visitors can walk along the rock and enjoy a cool breeze as well as view wildlife at the base.
Aruba Dam - was built in 1952 across the Voi river. The dam attracts many animals and water birds can be seen at this dam.
Tsavo/Athi rivers confluence - when the two rivers join they form the Galana river.
Elephants- Rhinos- Hirola Hunters Hartebeest.
2- Nature Trail
Adopted as one of the tourist recreation at the Taita Hills Resort- the trail needs to be established in a meticulous manner which will incorporate distinct and important botanical- geographical features and capture diverse avian habitats/ roosting areas which will form the basis of the educational tour. Bird watching- insect termite ecology will be an integral part of the nature walk.
3- Game Drives
The best times for viewing wildlife are early morning and mid to late afternoon. Light conditions at these times are also optimal for photography. The Sanctuary also offers a unique and unobtrusive facility for viewing wildlife from a different perspective in this area - night game drives. Since almost 40pct of the wildlife species at Taita are nocturnal- night game drives provide guests with an opportunity of seeing animals not normally encountered on a conventional game drive such as spotted and striped hyena- various species of mongoose- jackal- civet- genet- honey badger- porcupine and bush baby. Since most of our predators are also more active at night- the chances of encountering them on such a trip are also increased.
