Area Attractions
The town of Westport is situated near the mouth of the Carrowbeg river in the corner of Clew Bay. The earliest habitation in the area dates back some 5,000 years. Westport is designated one of Failte Ireland's Heritage Towns. One of the few planned towns in the Country, Westport was designed in the 18th Century by James Wyatt. It has become one of Ireland's established tourism centres, with many outstanding features, most notably the beautiful tree lined boulevard known as The Mall, running parallel to the Carrowbeg River. Croagh Patrick, one of Europe's best know places of Pilgrimage, has provided a tough ascent for many pilgrims each year, climbing barefoot in the memory of St. Patrick, who spent forty days and forty nights fasting on the summit more than 1,500 years ago. A small church at the summit of the mountain welcomes penitents, while magnificent views of Clew Bay, with an island for every day of the week, provides inspiration for many walkers and visitors throughout the year. Westport is, of course, home of Westport House and Country Estate, one of Ireland's top Day Visitor Attractions. This fine Georgian mansion, home of Lord Sligo, is open to visitors from April to September each year.

Located on the 4th floor of the hotel, under the shadow of Croagh Patrick is the Blue Wave Restaurant, which holds an AA Rosette for food & service and three RAC dining awards. The atmosphere is warm, friendly and inspires total relaxation. The Blue Wave, is one of the finest restaurants in Westport. Given the hotel's location on the shores of Clew Bay, our Head Chef Frank Walsh, chooses only the finest local fresh fish, meat & fresh produce for each evening's menu. How to get:
Directions from Dublin: Leave Dublin onto the Motorway M4. At the end of the motorway continue forward onto the N4. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the N6 signposted for Galway, Entering Kinnegad. Continue forward onto the N4. Go through Edgeworthstown. At the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the R393, signposted for the town centre. Continue forward onto the R393. You are now in Longford. Turn right onto the N5 signposted Dublin / Ballinalee. Continue forward onto New Street - N5 (one-way). Turn right onto the N5, signposted for Westport. Continue forward on the N5 going through the owns of Termonbarry, Frenchpark & Charlestown. Continue forward onto the N5. Arrive at Castlebar. Follow signs to Westport for approx 10 miles. When you get into Westport town, drive up Bridge Street in the right lane (the town clock is at the top of Bridge St). Turn right on to Shop Street and get into the left lane. Follow signs for the Coast Road or The Quay. Continuing on this road you will pass Westport Woods Hotel on your right and further on Centra Supermarket on you left. The Atlantic Coast Hotel is located on your left along the stone buildings. Directions from Galway: Leaving Galway city and follow the R866 to Headford. You must then bear right onto the N84 signposted for Castlebar. You will pass through the towns of Shrule & Kilmaine. Once you reach the town of Ballinrobe again look for the signs for Castlebar. Once you reach the village of Partry turn Left onto the R330 following the signs to Westport. Continue for 18 miles until you come to Westport. When you get to Westport drive along Mill Street, passed the town clock on your left and onto Shop Street. Stay in the left lane. Follow signs for the Coast Road or The Quay. Continuing on this road you will pass Westport Woods Hotel on your right and further on Centra Supermarket on you left. The Atlantic Coast Hotel is located on your left along the stone buildings.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF IRELAND - COUNTRY LIFE The award-winning National Museum of Ireland - Country Life is set in the spectacular grounds of Turlough Park and brings to life the traditions of rural life throughout Ireland from 1850-1950. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition at their leisure or can avail of one of the daily guided tours. The excellent `hands-on` public programme which runs throughout the year, consists of art and craft workshops, demonstrations and performances. Open year round, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am - 5pm; Sunday, 2pm - 5pm. Closed Mondays (including Bank Holidays). Admission free. Museum Shop and Cafe open. Free parking with full wheelchair access throughout.
